| Important SSI and Tax Rebate Information for Social Security Recipients
President Bush has signed the economic stimulus bill and the Internal Revenue Service will begin sending stimulus payments, popularly known as tax rebates, in May 2008. According to Frank Torano of Social Security Administration, (Area Work Incentive Coordinator - AWIC) based in Tampa, (AWIC for Southern Florida), the upcoming $300 tax rebate that will be issued will be considered a resource for purposes of computing SSI eligibility. Accordingly, if the tax rebate funds received are not spent within 2 months of receipt, it will count and can push a beneficiary's resource limits past the allowable level of $2,000 for singles and $3,000 for married couples - thereby making them no longer eligible for Medicaid due to ineligibility for SSI. However, the tax rebates will not be counted as income for purposes of computing SSI.
Please make certain that all persons receiving Supplemental Security Income be advised to spend down as necessary within 2 months of receiving the tax rebate (if pushed over resource limitations) to avoid loss of benefits.
If you have any questions, please contact your local Social Security Office.
