The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the capability of assistive technology to empower, educate, and include persons with disabilities in  all aspects of life.
 
The event will include a variety of presentations, exhibits, and demonstrations by vendors and community agencies as well as recreational activities and art displays.  It is free and open to the public on Saturday, with a small registration fee for Thursday and Friday.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SEEKS TODDLERS FOR RESEARCH PROJECT:

Building Social Communication Skills in Young Children

The University of Miami is seeking families with toddlers between 15 and 24 months of age who are at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to participate in a multi-site project evaluating Hanen's More than Words Program.  More than Words is a parent-training intervention designed specifically for parents of very young children with ASD idesigned to enhance social communication and to improve overall parenting communication strategies.

     UNITED HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION HELPS UNDERINSURED CHILDREN      

The Foundation offers support for children nationwide with assistance grants for medical services not fully covered by health insurance.  Parents and caretakers can apply for up to $5,000.00 for health care services that will help improve their children's health and quality of life. 

        Eligibility Requirements Include:

  • Children 16 years old or younger
  • Families must meet economic guidelines
  • Children must live in the U.S.
  • Children must be covered by a commercial health insurance plan.

Examples of the types of medical services covered include: speech therapy, physical therapy, psychotherapy; medical equipment such as wheelchairs, braces, hearing aids, eye-glasses,; and orthodontic and dental treatments.

"DISASTER PREPARATION, RESPONSE AND RECOVERY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR CAREGIVERS"

                            SATURDAY, MAY 17, 2008 - 8:00 A.M to 3:00 PM                                    Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus - 300 NE 2nd Avenue, Bldg. 3 - Miami, Florida  33132 

Speakers will include experts in disaster preparation and response fron the County's Department of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross.  Learn how to develop an emergency plan, what steps to take to prepare for a disaster and what shelter options exist.  Learn what services are available to people with disabilities, including special needs shelters and transportation services. 

Deadline to register is May 1st.  Volunteers are welcome.

 " INCLUDING SAMUEL"

Dan Habib's documentary film Including Samuel examines the educational and social inclusion of youth with disabilities. The film is built on the efforts of Habib and his family to include Samuel, 7, in all facets of school and community. Including Samuel also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with dozens of teachers, young people, parents and disability rights experts.

"Including Samuel" DVD and Viewer’s Guide is licensed for educational, instructional and educational use and is a great resource for the inclusion of children with disabilities in every aspects of our lives.
