Training To Build Capacity
Experience has shown that inclusion is not possible without staff that are prepared and committed to serving children with disabilities, and programs that have acquired specific competencies. Click here to review those competencies.
With staff competency critical to successful inclusive programs, a key component of ACT activities is staff training.ALL CHILDREN TOGETHER (ACT) TRAININGS
PARTICIPATION IN ANY OF THE TRAININGS LISTED BELOW MAY BE USED BY THE CHILDREN'S TRUST FUNDED OUT OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS TO FULFILL THE INCLUSION TRAINING REQUIREMENTS.
We strongly recommend Discovering Inclusion as the first training for those with no previous experience working with children who have disabilities.

ENCOURAGING APPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS teaches participants practical strategies for increasing positive behavior in all children. Strategies include managing transitions; and creating limits, classroom rules, and schedules as a way to encourage compliance and positive social interaction. (2 hours)

LET'S PLAY TOGETHER: PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR ADAPTING RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES provides practical strategies for adapting both outdoor and indoor activities for children with various disabilities. During this workshop, individuals are assigned a disability to simulate, and are challenged to participate in typical out of school programs. Participants will use props and each other to devise adaptations and accommodations. (3 hours)

LEARNING TOGETHER: STRATEGIES THAT WORK FOR ALL CHILDREN introduces seven different ways that children learn, and provides strategies to increase successful outcomes for all children, including those with learning and other disabilities. Participants will leave with materials and resources to use in their out of school programs.(2 hours)

DISCOVERING INCLUSION is an introductory workshop appropriate for all children's services providers (including direct care staff, site supervisors, and administrators). Participants learn to distinguish between and among broad categories of disabilities, identify the benefits of inclusion, use "People First" language and practice respectful etiquette. (2 hours)

AN ADMINISTRATOR'S INTRODUCTION TO INCLUSION REQUIREMENTS is designed specifically for agency directors and other staff responsible for developing and implementing organizational policies and procedures. This training focuses on an agency's legal requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act, developing policies and procedures insuring compliance and promoting inclusion, introducing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, (IDEA), learning how the Individual Education Plan can be used as a tool for out of school programming, and conducting an environmental scan for accessibility. (4 hours)

Encouraging Appropriate Behavior Part 2 builds on the knowledge learned in the Encouraging Appropriate Behavior training, (a prerequisite). This training introduces the ABCs of behavior - antecedents, behaviors, and consequences; and teaches participants how to develop a behavior plan and identify strategies for selecting reinforcers to increase positive behaviors. (3 hours)

Introduction to Working with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) introduces participants to ASD, and the conditions to which it refers. Topics include using visual strategies to help children with ASD understand behavioral expectations, recognizing and accommodating special sensory needs, applying strategies for fostering social competence, and learning practical strategies for managing adaptive skill deficits. (2 hours)

Birth – 5: Incorporating Interventions into Everyday Routines is designed specifically for early learning center staff and others working with children birth-5. Participants learn how to incorporate into the daily curriculum, interventions in the areas of language and communication, cognition, social-emotional and motor skills development. This interactive workshop also introduces the concept of "Universal Design", and demonstrates how to make low tech, inexpensive accommodations that benefit all children. (3 hours)
