Training To Build Capacity

Our first year of the ACT project showed us clearly that inclusion is not possible without staff that are prepared and committed to serving children with disabilities. We began our efforts, with the help of experienced providers, by identifying the competencies that make up a prepared and committed staff. Click here to review those competencies.

With staff competency so critical to inclusive programs, a key component of ACT activities is staff training. In the first year, over 900 staff attended ACT trainings, and in 2008 we will continue this effort.  ACT staff have worked hard to focus training on the core competencies—what people need to be able to do—and to try to move programs from training, to on-site consultation and then to supports for specific inclusion efforts.

Under the supervision of Training Coordinator, Philip Collazo, ACT’s work plan for 2008 includes various trainings:

DISCOVERING INCLUSION covers basic information on different types of disabilities, and how to communicate respectfully with and about people with disabilities, the benefits of inclusion for all children.  An introduction to agency  responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  is also provided.

TARGETED SPECIALIZED TRAINING for direct care staff  and their supervisors. The training is interactive, and focuses on concrete strategies for making program activities accessible to all children.  Topics include Introduction to Inclusion, Supporting Positive Behavior, Partnering with Families, and Respectful Accommodations.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING FOR DIRECTORS AND ADMINISTRATORS on specific topics such as how to find funding for inclusion, ADA compliance, developing inclusive policies and procedures, liability and legal issues.
