There are some problems that only money can solve; education, training, and therapies become low priorities when faced with eviction, no food with which to feed your children, or an inability to get around because of a broken wheelchair.
CCDH receives funds from a variety of public and private sources for emergency financial assistance to individuals with disabilities and their families. These funds may be used to provide assistance with rent, utilities, food, diapers and equipment repair. Eligibility requirements vary by funding source.
Public funders include the Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program, United Way of Miami-Dade, and the Florida Alliance for Assistive Technology.
Corporations, and people just like you, make it possible to sustain two other funds for emergency financial assistance:
THE PATRICIA LEE WINN FAMILY EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE FUND (PLWFEAF)
Named in memory of the daughter of Senator and Mrs. Sherman Winn, this fund provides limited financial assistance to meet basic needs during times of crisis. Eligibility requirements include that the money will be used to assist an individual with a developmental or other disability, that there are no other available resources to meet this need, and that the applicant has not received money from this fund within the past 12 months.
THE MICHAEL GREY WHEELCHAIR REPAIR FUND
In 2004, Michael Grey, now a sophomore at Miami-Palmetto Senior High, began raising money for children using wheelchairs. Having started as a mitzvah project for his Bar Mitzvah, this year marks his 4th annual poker tournament to raise money for wheelchair repairs for children with disabilities. Having spent 22 weeks in a wheelchair after undergoing reconstructive foot surgery at age 12, Michael knows first hand how important it is to have one that is safe, comfortable, and functioning properly.
