Maria's Story

Maria is the single mother of 2 teenage boys – Edward, 15 and James, 13.  Both have cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities (sometimes called mental retardation).  James also has a seizure disorder.  When Maria called CCDH she was overwhelmed, and did not know where to begin to look for help.

HERE IS HOW CCDH STAFF WAS ABLE TO HELP

They helped Maria apply for SSI and Medicaid for her sons.  They have since  received both.

James had 3 days of his anti-seizure medication left, and Maria had no money  to pay for the $800 prescription. We arranged for a physician to evaluate  James immediately, and provide him with free medication.

Both boys were referred to the Agency for Persons with Disabilities.

Arrangements were made for Edward to be seen,  at no cost, at the Shriner’s Orthopedic Hospital in Tampa where he was evaluated and fitted for a specialized wheelchair.

Emergency Assistance funding provided $200 in food vouchers.

A private donor provided a month’s supply of diapers.

Our In-Home Supports program provided 200 hours of help caring for Edward and James.
