Michael Grey Wheelchair Repair Fund

Photo of Michael GreyIn 2004, Michael Grey (right), organized the first Michael Grey Poker Tournament to raise money for wheelchair repairs for children with disabilities as his Bar Mitzvah project. Having spent 22 weeks in a wheelchair after undergoing reconstructive foot surgery at age 12, Michael knew firsthand the importance of having a wheelchair that is safe, comfortable, and functioning properly.  Michael’s idea of a family-friendly mock poker tournament resulted in a successful event that also raised awareness about children with disabilities.  Michael hosted the event annually throughout his high school years.

In 2010, with Michael away at college, organization of the annual tournament was passed on to Jay and Brian Morrison.  Michael, and now Jay and Brian, along with their many family and friends, have raised and donated more than $20,000 to CCDH.

These are the stories of two children benefiting from this generosity..

TOMMY

CCDH located a donated wheelchair for Tommy.  Two years later, it was badly in need of repairs.  For safety reasons, the school transportation system would not allow Tommy on the bus until the wheelchair was repaired.  The family is too poor to pay for “extras”, yet makes just over the limit to qualify for public assistance.  New trunk supports pads with hardware and other repairs totaling $400 put Tommy back on the bus and back in school.

STEVEN

Steven is 5 years old, has cerebral palsy, and underwent surgery at the Shriner’s Hospital in Tampa to loosen the tendons in his legs. He lives with his mother and grandmother.

The manual wheelchair Steven had was too heavy for them to lift into the car; as a result, he was spending almost all his time indoors at home.  After arguing with his father’s insurance company, the family was able to convince it to pay for a special stroller costing $1,500.  This specialized stroller provides a way for Steven to get around, making it possible for him and his family to participate in activities outside their home.  The lack of $200 to cover the insurance co-payment kept the stroller just out of Steven’s reach until his mom found CCDH.  Michael Grey Wheelchair Repair Fund donations took care of the deductible, and mom reports that Steven is enjoying zipping around in his CX14 Cruiser.
